In 2005, Koala Venture is using state of the art technology to investigate the behabviour of koalas at Blair Athol Mine.
We have already found that koalas use many non-food species in the local area and it appears that these trees are important places for koalas to rest during hot weather.
Now, using satellite tracking, we are investigating just how far koalas travel in their lives. Follow the link to see the latest update. These images are downloaded weekly from the ARGOS web site, so even when the tracking team is in Brisbane the koalas can be found. Even better, we can do this without disturbing the koalas.
We are also developing a system of investigating the metabolic cost of the activities koalas carry out each day - such as eating, climbing and sleeping. This will let us know how disturbances in their environment affect them - such things as fewer trees and cleared spaces.
In time, we hope to understand the way a koala sees its surroundings, so that we can identify and help conserve those vital features of our landscape that koalas need to survive.
