The Schools Program began in 1993 when Blair Athol Mine, in conjunction with teachers from the Queensland Department of Education, developed an educational program to give students insight into how a mine operates. The koalas feature prominently throughout this program. Involving the local community through this program has ensured long-term understanding and community support for the revegetation objectives. For many of the children visiting Blair Athol Mine, it is their first close-up interaction with an untamed Australian native animal.
A poster containing information on the project's results was produced and distributed to primary schools, to be used as a resource when studying topics ranging from the environment and Australian native wildlife to sustainable land use. A copy of the poster can be ordered through the Rio Tinto Coal Australia website.
The Schools Program formed the basis of Blair Athol Mine's winning entry in the 1997 Premier of Queensland's Award for Environmental Excellence int he Queensland Mining Industry.
The koalas at Blair Athol Mine also feature at other regional community events including the Clermont Agricultural Show.
